The Value of a Project Management Certificate

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

The value of a college degree has become more and more apparent in today’s economy. Most professional jobs require a bachelor’s degree at the minimum, and many either require or strongly prefer advanced degrees. The question many college graduates are now asking, is whether or not it’s worth the investment – both in time and money – in order to obtain an advanced degree or professional certification.

The answer, for the most part, is a resounding yes. As competition in the job market increases, human resources managers are becoming overwhelmed with resume submissions for any and every open position. The first step they take in thinning out applications is to eliminate anyone without an advanced degree or certification.

There is some debate about whether or not this kind of broad strokes elimination is an effective hiring strategy. Some professionals believe that only considering candidates with an advanced degree or certification eliminates a variety of highly experienced professionals who don’t have the degree, but who have years and years of experience. While this may be true, the reality is that in today’s economy degrees and certifications speak volumes. Experience is valuable, but in order to make your resume shine, you need those letters after your name. Whether you’re just starting out and need a leg up on the competition, or are a seasoned professional looking to get your resume to the top of the stack there is a college or university that has a graduate or certificate program that’s right for you.

For example, Boston University Metropolitan College offers flexible scheduling, online and on-campus courses, and a variety of undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs for both traditional and non-traditional students. Their IT Project Management Graduate Certificate program is available both full- and part-time, online, on-campus and in the a blended format, which combines online and on-site courses. After completing BU MET’s IT Project Management Graduate Certificate program, students can pursue project management certification such as PMI’s (PMP) certification by taking an optional PMP preparation course.

The Trouble With Sales Training

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

What impact does attending a sales training program have on change?

It all depends on what type of training format your sales people attend. Too many companies look for quick fixes and waste heaps of money in the process.sales coaching

Firstly forget Event Style training – you know those one day RAH RAH sessions that promise the world and deliver nothing in the long run. They DON’T work! They have the effect of a hot bath – nice whilst you are in it but it soon gets cold.

I am not saying all the content of these programs is wrong (although some of them just plain are) its just that one-day-only of anything just don’t bring about any real permanent change.

And even if the sales training is relevant, incremental and delivered in bite size chunks over time, if the salespeople are returned to the same environment (same metrics, same rewards, same supervision, same culture) as before then training, no matter how excellent it is, has no lasting impact either.

Ask yourself these questions: What are you trying to change by offering sales training? Do you want change to occur as a result of the training if so can it be defined and measured? What is the point of doing the training? What am I trying to achieve with training?

Don’t laugh most people don’t ask themselves these questions.

Sales Training needs to be an integrated process involving role clarity, clear sales competencies, sales plans, sales metrics, regular infield coaching, etc. all linked to a strategy – not some after thought or isolated event.sales training

No wonder if you walked into your sales staff work area right now and told them they need some sales training you’d get the following responses.

“Not another sales training seminar?? they say. or “It’s so boring, we know all that already??.

Who can blame them? They’ve been there done that. And even if they know it all, the trouble is, many of them have not been given the right support to effectively apply what they know.

A study conducted a number of years ago found that within one week of leaving any sales skills training program salespeople had lost 87% of the new skills they had learned during the training program.

Recent research by ES Research Group shows that 90% of all sales training programs result in a 90 – 120 day increase in productivity – but after that, nothing. It was only a temporary blip! Fewer than 20% of companies show sustainable productivity gains that last a year or more.

Caveman Investing by Phin Upham

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

The surprising impossibility of steady growth. Phin Upham discusses the geopolitical dangers facing the world.

A gold coin invested at 3% above inflation at the time of Christ would be worth today as much as a sphere of gold four times larger than the world. This implies that over time even this growth rate is not feasible – not because it is high in times of stability but because every few hundred years the world goes through some event which results in the destruction of the stock of economic wealth. Forest fires are said to be essential to the health of hardwood forests, indeed firemen sometimes light them on purpose to “rejuvenate” a forest. It seems that perhaps economic forest fires may be a fact of life as well.

As peace and growth in the world occurred since 1950, and globalization became preeminent the wealth was funneled into developing the periphery nations where cheap labor and natural resources could be funneled back into the core. With this crisis the wealth has shrunk back into the core (only recently has some risk appetite returned) and the periphery is the most unstable. People worry about the EU but no feasible outcome of the PIGS crisis there will result in anything like global conflagration.

The premium in the modern world has turned from economic growth to political stability. The future might belong not to the fastest growing but to the most stable – by in large the US and Japan.

Samuel Phineas Upham has a PhD in Applied Economics from the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania).  Phin is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.  He can be reached at phin@phinupham.com

Helping You Become a Lawyer

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

The bar exam is right around the corner and I hope everyone that is about to take this massive test is ready to Pass the Bar. It is a really difficult test that requires weeks and weeks of preparation. At this point, I hope everyone has completed their in-person studies, but there is still a lot you can do via online courses and classes and such. The online materials, such as from Adaptibar, are the ones that will help you with the multiple choice portions of the test, which I think are by far the hardest parts. Through the use of many MBE practice questions, you can prepare for that part of the test. Repetition is the key to that section, I believe.

Once you have done all of the studying though, you need to keep your health and your head about you, because the actual test is one of the bigger challenges. It is three days long and it is a mental and physical challenge. Don’t overwork on the days leading right up to it, because you are going to need as much energy as you can manage to be ready for it. For sure. The people that I know that failed the bar exam were mainly the ones that tired themselves out too much in the weeks beforehand and made themselves weak. Some of them got sick and weren’t able to put their best effort forward. So, in short, studying is key, but so is keeping yourself in a proper frame of mind and physicality for the test.

Benefits and Weaknesses of West Virginia Criminal Records

Friday, July 1st, 2011

People love to find out interesting information on those they come into contact with. Most everyone has sat in front of a computer and decided to Google someone they used to know just to see what comes up, and even more have gone so far as to actively search for that information. It can also be argued that the most interesting data that could show up in a search is West Virginia criminal records, since this information is arguably the most groundbreaking to someone that is curious about someone else. Yet there are benefits and weaknesses to using this information, regardless of how interesting it may be.

Benefits of West Virginia Criminal Records

Starting with the benefits, it’s obvious how some of this information can be useful. First and foremost, you have the ability to learn if someone could be dangerous, or at the very least if they are someone you need to be very skeptical of. While some crimes are more harmless, anyone that steals, is violent, or otherwise breaks the law is certainly more of a risk than someone that has not, at least on average. Knowing this is important, especially if it was a secret.

Yet even beyond this there is a personality component as well. It is tough to deny that those with criminal records are probably more likely to be irresponsible, make bad decisions, handle stress poorly, etc. Few people have a West Virginia criminal record by accident, and so there are certainly implications that you can get from these records that may be interesting.

Weaknesses of West Virginia Criminal Records

Yet just because these records are useful, doesn’t make them perfect. One of the most glaring problems with these West Virginia criminal records is the assumption that someone is safe because they don’t have a record. People can commit crimes and not get caught, or still commit crimes in the future. Every criminal had a time in their life where they had committed no crimes before. It’s foolish to assume that the lack of a criminal record means that someone is safe.

Similarly, there are a lot of crimes that show up in these records that it could be argued are fairly minor. Just because someone has a West Virginia criminal record does not mean that they are necessarily bad people or deserve any scorn. Like everything in life, it depends on the person and the circumstance.

Value of West Virginia Criminal Records

It’s clear that these west virginia public records are most certainly interesting, as well as otherwise informative. You can learn a lot about other people simply by uncovering one of these records, which is why no matter what they are a benefit to have around. Just make sure that you do not learn more about someone than these records truly indicate. Not having a criminal record doesn’t make one perfect or not dangerous, just as having a record doesn’t make someone bad or unsafe automatically. Everything needs to be evaluated on a case by case basis, just as you would anything else.
